God Made Penny Special

Illustration

The hospital room was quiet.

Soft lights glowed like little moons on the walls.
Machines hummed gently — not loud, just a soft “mmm… mmm… mmm…”
Outside the window, the sky was turning dark blue.

Penny lay in her bed, tucked under a cozy blanket covered in tiny stars.

Her stuffed bunny rested beside her.
Its ears were floppy and soft from being hugged many times.

Penny watched the ceiling.

She did not feel sleepy.

She did not feel like smiling either.

Penny’s mommy sat in a chair next to the bed, holding Penny’s hand.

Mommy stroked her hair slowly — back and forth, back and forth.

Mommy could tell Penny was thinking very hard.

“Penny,” Mommy said softly, “what’s on your mind, sweetheart?”

Penny’s voice was tiny.

“Why am I here?”

Mommy squeezed her hand gently.
“Because the doctors are helping your body.”

Penny looked down at the blanket.

“Other kids get to go home.”

Mommy’s eyes grew warm and kind.

“Yes, some kids do. And some kids need extra help for a while.”

Penny whispered, “Why do I need extra help?”

Mommy paused, choosing gentle words.

“Because your body is very special.”

Penny frowned a little.
“Special doesn’t feel fun.”

Mommy leaned closer.

“I know, sweetheart. Sometimes special things are also hard things.”

Penny blinked slowly.

“Did God make me like this?”

Mommy nodded softly.

“Yes. God made you.”

Penny looked worried.

“Did He make a mistake?”

Mommy’s eyes filled with love.

“Oh no, Penny. God never makes mistakes.”

Mommy brushed Penny’s cheek with her thumb.

“God made you on purpose.”

Penny’s eyebrows lifted a little.

“On purpose?”

Mommy smiled.

“Yes. Before you were even born, God knew you.”

Penny thought about that.

Mommy continued in a soft, bedtime voice:

“God chose your eyes… your smile… your laugh… your hugs.”

Penny touched her own cheek.

“My laugh?”

Mommy nodded.
“Yes. Your giggle is one of my favorite sounds in the whole world.”

Penny’s lips twitched — almost a smile.

Mommy said, “God made your heart kind.”

Penny whispered, “My heart?”

Mommy nodded.
“Yes. You notice when people are sad. You share your bunny. You say thank you.”

Penny hugged her bunny a little tighter.

Mommy continued:

“God made you brave too.”

Penny blinked. “Brave?”

Mommy smiled proudly.

“Yes. You take medicine even when it tastes yucky.
You hold still for tests.
You keep going even when you feel tired.”

Penny thought about that.

“I don’t feel brave.”

Mommy kissed her forehead.

“Sometimes brave people don’t feel brave. They just keep going.”

Penny’s eyes got shiny — not tears, just big feelings.

Mommy pointed gently to Penny’s chest.

“And most of all, God put a beautiful light inside you.”

Penny whispered, “A light?”

Mommy nodded.

“Yes. Your kindness, your love, your smile… that’s your light.”

Penny asked quietly, “Even when I’m sick?”

Mommy’s voice was very sure.

“Especially then.”

Penny looked toward the window.

The first star had appeared in the sky.

“Why would God make me different?” Penny asked.

Mommy took a slow breath.

“Because the world needs different kinds of special.”

Penny listened.

“Some people run fast,” Mommy said.
“Some people draw pictures.”
“Some people build things.”
“And some people show others how to be gentle, brave, and loving.”

Mommy smiled.

“You do that every day.”

Penny whispered, “I do?”

Mommy nodded.

“When the nurse comes in, you say hello.
When a kid in the hallway cries, you wave to them.
You make people feel better.”

Penny remembered.

“The little boy with the dinosaur shirt…”

“Yes,” Mommy said. “You made him smile.”

Penny’s mouth curled into a small smile too.

Mommy said softly:

“God made you exactly who you are.
Wonderfully made.
Loved very much.”

Penny asked, “Does God love me here?”

Mommy leaned close.

“God is here right now.”

Penny looked around the room.

“In this room?”

Mommy nodded.

“Yes. God is with you in hospitals… in homes… everywhere.”

Penny whispered, “I can’t see Him.”

Mommy smiled.

“You can feel Him.”

Penny thought.

“How?”

Mommy gently placed Penny’s hand over her own heart.

“Feel your heartbeat.”

Penny felt the soft thump… thump… thump.

“That’s life God gave you.”

Mommy then hugged Penny carefully.

“Feel this hug?”

Penny nodded.

“That’s love God gave you.”

Mommy brushed Penny’s hair again.

“And when you feel calm… safe… peaceful… that’s God’s comfort.”

Penny’s body relaxed a little.

Mommy said softly, almost like singing:

“God made you.
God loves you.
God is with you.
And God says you are special.”

Penny whispered the words back:

“God made me… God loves me… God is with me…”

Mommy smiled. “And God says you are special.”

Penny’s eyes began to grow sleepy.

The machines kept humming softly.

Outside, more stars had come out to watch the night.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Can we tell God thank you?”

Mommy’s face lit up.

“Of course.”

They folded their hands together.

Mommy prayed slowly:

“Dear God,
Thank You for Penny.
Thank You for making her special.
Thank You for loving her every moment.
Please help her body, give her peace, and fill her heart with Your light.
Amen.”

Penny whispered, “Amen.”

Mommy kissed her forehead.

“I love you more than all the stars.”

Penny looked out the window.

“There are a lot of stars.”

Mommy smiled. “Yes. And I still love you more.”

Penny hugged her bunny.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“I think God loves me even more than that.”

Mommy’s eyes sparkled.

“You’re right. He does.”

Penny’s eyelids slowly closed.

Her breathing became soft and steady.

Peaceful.
Safe.
Loved.

Because God made Penny.
God loved Penny.
And God said Penny was wonderfully special — just as she was.

And God says the same about you too.
